The article attempts to interpret Thomas Mann's short story "Tonio Kröger" on the basis of the "Schiller code", which is present in it as a text and as a subtext. The textual level is formed by F. Schiller's drama "Don Carlos", with one of the characters of which - the Spanish King Philip the Second - the protagonist of the short story "Tonio Kröger" feels a spiritual kinship. This kinship lies in the contradictory feelings of superiority and rejection. This combination is not an isolated example; it is characteristic of many key works of German and, more broadly, European modernity. It was theoretically substantiated in F. Schiller's philosophical essay "Über die naive und sentimentalische Dichtung", which forms the ideological subtext of the short story. The article traces parallels between T. Mann's short story and F. Schiller's essay. The anthropological type of sentimental consciousness also allows us to draw a parallel between the image of the artist and the criminal, so characteristic of both the works of T. Mann and F. Schiller. The comparison of Mann's short story and Schiller's essay allows us not only to understand this famous short story more deeply, but also to reveal new facets of F. Schiller's work.
