The development of the institute of mentoring in the systems of higher and general secondary education requires the solution of a number of urgent problems. Within the framework of this publication, the purpose of the article is the question of the role of the mentor in the training of teaching staff for the school. The reliability and validity of the obtained research results is ensured by the theoretical analysis of scientific literature, professional standards, information and methodological materials. The essence and specifics of mentoring in education as a structural and functional phenomenon are clarified. The role of a mentor in relation to novice teachers in the university and post-university period is analyzed. The functional of mentoring in the system of higher and general secondary education, necessary for the effective professional education of young teachers, is systematized, the main subjects of mentoring are clarified. It is concluded that in order to eliminate systemic problems and comply with the principle of continuity, mentoring needs to be supported and developed by various institutions.
