Learning in English (EMI) promotes the study of English-language content mainly among international students who use English as an additional language. In applied linguistics, the field of English as a Linguafrank (ELF) research is aimed at global communication between users of the English language. ELF research has shown that English is not always used among them, and even when it is used, it is included in broader communication resources. Similarly, translanguaging research has shown how illusory and ideological language boundaries are in real social practice among multilingual people. Collectively, it is more reasonable to recognize that EMI participants use their entire language repertoire and practice translation from one language to another. A theory in the field of social sciences, rethinks English as a supposed system among many interactive, nested meaning-forming systems, including other languages.
