This paper is devoted to the problem of mixed metaphor as a linguistic-cognitive phenomenon in modern English. The article examines the role of metaphor in philology and the reasons for the change in the attitude of modern linguists to mixed metaphors since cognitive science has started gaining momentum. Based on the results of theoretical research into mixed metaphor and a practical international linguistic-cognitive experiment, several key features of mixed metaphors are highlighted and several innovative classifications of mixed metaphors are proposed.
