Precedent names in U.S. weapons and military equipment designations

The article is devoted to the study of precedent names in the designations of weapons and military equipment of the United States. The aim of the study is to identify the specificity of language consciousness of military personnel and the symbolic potential of vocabulary and phraseology of professional military language. The author identifies groups of precedent names of inventors of weapons, military leaders, political figures, pioneers and Indian chiefs in the names of weapons. The article concludes that the inclusion of precedent names, which represent a fund of ethnic background knowledge, determining a person's belonging to a particular culture, indicates the value dominant in the US military environment - pride in the historical past of the nation and a sense of national superiority.
