The peasantry of Russia in the 17th century constituted the most numerous part of the population, however, the private life of the peasant community in Russia of that period in general and the Russian north in particular has been studied insufficiently. The white clergy, who were closest to the peasantry, have also been little studied in their private life. An idea of the way of life and everyday existence of the most numerous group of secular and spiritual society will make it possible to create a complete picture of the public life of Rus' in the 17th century, which determined the relevance of the chosen topic. The purpose of the article is to study the private life of the peasants and clergy of the Vologda province in the 17th century. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that, based on the surviving archives of the Vologda Bishop's House of the 17th century, located in the archives of Moscow (RGADA. F. 281), St. Petersburg (Archive of the SPbIHI RAS. Col. 117, 34, 98; OR RNB. F. 532), Vologda (GAVO. F. 1260), conclusions are made regarding the peculiarities of the private life of the peasantry and clergy of the Vologda province of the 17th century. The study reveals significant features of the private life of the peasant community and the white clergy, which help to get an idea of the life of the most numerous part of the population. This allows the author to conclude that the peasant community supported the white clergy, participating in all matters of the local parish, from the construction of the church to the allocation of food for confessors. In turn, the priest participated in all significant events of each peasant family, and the parish was the central place of the community.
