FUNCTIONING OF IRONY IN MEDIA DISCOURSE WHEN CREATING THE IMAGE OF A POLITICAL FIGURE

Gordeeva Natalia Alekseevna  (Lecturer Peoples' Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba. )

The article examines various types of irony and their features. The author summarizes information from several dictionaries and identifies verbal, dramatic and situational irony. Verbal irony is a discrepancy between expression and intention, when the speaker says one thing and means another. Dramatic irony occurs when words and actions have a meaning that the listener understands, but the speaker does not. Situational irony is a discrepancy between intention and result. Particular attention is paid to verbal irony and its use for reasons of politeness. The author argues that irony allows the speaker to be impolite and at the same time seem polite. Situational irony, which has little to do with language play or figurative speech, is also discussed. The author gives an example of the use of situational irony by a Wimbledon commentator.

Keywords:vocabulary, irony, media discourse, politics.
