The article considers the transformation of methodological approaches to teaching foreign languages in higher education. The transition from traditional grammar-translation methods to communicative-oriented teaching with a professional focus is analyzed. The author explores modern principles of organizing language education: individualization of the educational process, digitalization of the educational environment, intercultural orientation, professionalization of language training. The key challenges of teaching a foreign language in non-linguistic universities are identified: limited amount of study time, heterogeneity of students' language training, motivational deficit. Particular attention is paid to didactic strategies for increasing the effectiveness of language teaching: simulation modeling of professional situations, implementation of case analysis technology, use of digital educational platforms, integration of a foreign language component into project activities. The need for a systematic approach to the transformation of language education in higher education is substantiated.
