The fate of the foreign prisoners of war in Russia under the rule of the Bolsheviks

This article focuses upon a subject which, in the socialist literature has been widely researched, but has been seriously neglected in western scholarship. The research in the USSR and the GDR, however, emerged from an ideological point of view, which sometimes hindered a close examination. On the basis of Russian and German archival documents, but also from the memoirs of former prisoners of war, the author tries here for the first time to outline a realistic picture of the living conditions of the prisoners in the first months of soviet rule.
