the article gives a brief information about the narrators of the Altai Mountains from the end of XIX to the present day, and the information obtained during the poll on the project "Kaichi-Keeper of the traditions of the Altai peoples." The current state of the Altai storytelling art is also considered. Storytelling is a component of traditional culture, one of the ethnic characteristics that has survived to the present day and exist along with the phenomena of modern civilization. In the Altai epic, as well as in the epic monuments of other peoples, the main thing that makes up life is concentrated: a person, his land, his family, procreation, his relationship with the environment and the outside world in General. And all this forms a system of spirituality, the destruction of which is the disappearance of the measure of recognition, ultimately – a violation of spiritual integrity. In this perspective, the special role of the narrator and his epic knowledge can be seen. Modern living conditions dictated by life, make their changes in the field of storytelling. Now, storytellers are conditionally divided into two groups: the first group of storytellers corresponds to traditional representations about storytellers-kaichi, i.e. they in full know some heroic legends and are their carriers. The second group can be described as performers of throat singing – kalachi. But, even if the tradition of transmitting storytelling skills from generation to generation by word of mouth was interrupted, the traditional storytelling art of the Altai people continues to live among the people and develop without losing the traditional elements of ancient art.
