The article is devoted to the study of methodological techniques used in the compilation of the first textbooks on the French language in the Russian Empire. The results of the analysis of the studied sources indicate the compilational or partially compilational nature of textbooks for French language teaching; the books were incomplete and inconsistent in the presentation of material, but in the process of popularizing the French language and with the increase in the number of teaching aids, they began to acquire originality, to be enriched with new methodological techniques, allowing Russian subjects not only to study the French language independently but also to independently improve their skills in this area.
