The purpose of the article is to compare the structure of a sports news narrative within the framework of the linguocultural paradigm. The material for the study was media texts from electronic sports periodicals in Russia and English-speaking countries (the USA and the UK). The study used the linguo-narrative method. We conducted a comparison of the structure of news sports messages in English and Russian. We also used quantitative method and methods of statistical data processing. The heading complex (headline and lead paragraph) of Russian news articles is characterized by an informative focus, neutrality, and contains more analytical expressions. At the same time, the headline complex of English-language news articles is dominated by an emotional and accusatory orientation; the authors of the materials express their emotions and feelings, and show their personal preferences. The most significant secondary components in the structure of Russian sports news narrative are “background (preceding events and context)” and “consequences-actions”. English-language sports narrative has its basis in “verbal reaction” and “comments”. The identified differences allow to conclude that an event expressed using different components of the narrative structure is interpreted differently in different cultures.
Keywords:sports narrative, linguo-narrative method, episode, background (context, previous events), verbal reaction, consequences-actions, comments, linguocultural features.
