LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF THE FUNCTIONING OF LEGAL TERMS IN ENGLISH-LANGUAGE POPULAR SCIENTIFIC LEGAL TEXTS

The article discusses issues related to the study of the peculiarities of the use of legal terms in English-language legal popular scientific texts, as well as some linguistic aspects that ensure the functioning of English legal terminology correlated with the realities of the legal system of Great Britain. The paper examines the linguistic factors that determine the structure of the concepts "term in the dictionary" and "term in the text", as well as some ways and means to classify English-language legal terms. As part of the scientific research, an attempt was made to study the phenomenon of asymmetry of linguistic and legal signs in synonymy and polysemy, which explain the use of English-language legal terms and other lexical units in legal popular science texts from the point of view of their variability. Using the method of continuous sampling of legal terms denoting legal realities in English-language legal popular scientific texts, examples of synonymous and polysemic special legal terms are considered. The application of a comprehensive logical-conceptual (legal) and lexico-semantic (linguistic) analysis of terminological meanings allowed us to consider the asymmetry of English legal terms in terms of their functioning within the framework of legal discourse. The study of definitions of terms and translated equivalents as normative units confirmed the difficulties in translating popular scientific legal texts from Russian into English, and also allowed us to establish possible translation tactics, including methods of descriptive translation, transliteration and semantic calculus, methods of translating non-equivalent legal vocabulary using compensation and concretization methods.
