This scientific article is devoted to the analysis of the transformation of the ideological discourse and political practice of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) in the period from 2000 to the 2020s. The study traces the evolution of the party from the status of the leading opposition force in the 1990s to the current position of the "systemic opposition". The author examines the key stages of the ideological and organizational restructuring of the Communist Party, analyzes changes in the rhetoric and tactics of the party in the context of the changing socio-political realities of Russia. Special attention is paid to the contradictory nature of the opposition of the Communist Party, expressed in a combination of criticism of the socio-economic course of the government with support for the foreign policy line of the state. The article attempts to assess the degree of compliance of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation with theoretically justified signs of political opposition, which makes it possible to more accurately determine the place of the party in the modern Russian political system.
