The article examines the foundation, history of formation, teaching methods and educational structure of rural craft training workshops in the Russian Empire in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. A special place in our work is given to the methods and educational life of such workshops, the study of which may be relevant for the modern system of secondary vocational education. Our work analyzes both technically oriented training and the living conditions of students in dormitories, their daily routine and the length of the academic year. Attention is focused on the spiritual, moral and cultural education of students. The process of further employment of graduates of training workshops is discussed separately, as well as the importance of the experience of this process for today's technical colleges and schools.
