The article is devoted to the peculiarities of translation of works of fiction from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. The potential of using the method of cognitive modelling to recreate the author's picture of the world in different translations of A. N. Tolstoy's novel ‘Aelita’ into Spanish is analysed. The choice of empirical material is conditioned by the linguistic peculiarity of the original text, characterised by the abundance of occasional words, which serve to describe the fictional cosmic world. Transmission of the invented artificial language of the heroes in a foreign language requires a deep cognitive understanding of the content of the work and the use of non-standard translation solutions. The article presents and substantiates the sequence of translator's actions using the method of cognitive modeling when creating the text of the novel ‘Aelita’ by A. N. Tolstoy in Spanish. The author draws attention to the fact that cognitive modelling becomes a key tool in the translation process, allowing not only to comprehend, but also to adequately convey in another language the complex interweaving of meanings and images that form the basis of the author's fiction world.
