This article examines the reception of M.M. Bakhtin's carnival theory in Chinese literary studies. Chinese researchers have been actively studying Bakhtin's carnival theory since the early 1980s. To date, numerous works dedicated to the study of this theory have been published in China. The active dialogue between researchers has contributed to a deeper understanding of carnival theory and the expansion of its application in Chinese scholarly thought. The purpose of this work is to identify the main stages and trends in the reception of Bakhtin's carnival theory in China. The analysis presents the gradual development of carnival theory in Chinese academic discourse and examines the specifics of its perception at different stages. Based on the conducted analysis, the following conclusions were drawn: the reception of carnival theory in China has evolved from initial understanding through deep comprehension to multidimensional theoretical development. The most active discussions revolved around questions of the theory's historical validity and its methodological foundations.
