This study is devoted to identifying the features of the horror genre in Josh Malerman's novel "Bird box" (2014) in the context of the pandemic theme. The plot of the novel is based on a description of the emotional situations associated with the pandemic. The relevance of the work is determined by the identification of the peculiarities of the representation of the pandemic theme in fiction. The novelty of the research consists in the absence of an analysis of the works of this author in general and a specific work in particular. The main areas of work are the linguistics of emotions, the linguistics of text, cognitive linguistics and conceptology. When writing the article, private linguistic methods were used: descriptive, typologization, logical comparison. The material was collected using a continuous manual sampling method. The aim is to identify the means and ways of representing the fear generated by the pandemic in the work "Bird box", which belongs to the horror genre. The objectives of the research are to analyze the linguistic means used by the author to convey the atmosphere of fear, and to create an algorithm for describing the means of expression used in the text by language levels. Each of the means of expression is analyzed in order to identify the narrative features characteristic of the genre of the work and the writer. As a result of the analysis, it turned out that in order to reveal the emotions of the heroes of the work "Bird box", the author uses not only linguistic units related to the topic of fear, but also selects means of speech expressiveness plot-related to the symptoms of the disease described in the novel.
