The article discusses the problem of determining the level of development of cognitive universal educational actions in seventh-grade students. To do this, the paper describes one of the stages of a literature lesson. The author uses the formative assessment method to identify a level and develop the cognitive skills. It has been used assessment sheet, a summary sheet, and developed criteria as tools for formative assessment. Variants of tasks for identifying the main cognitive learning activities have been created and demonstrated, for example: a task for definition of a concept, a task for comparison, a task for generalization, a task for work with text and many others. Special attention is paid to studying the scientific works on metasubject learning outcomes and the method of formative assessment by both foreign and domestic researchers. The experiment revealed the need for systematic work on developing the cognitive skills of seventh-grade students, as well as the effectiveness of using the formative assessment method.
