The modern learning process sets the tasks that require independent productive work to find solutions. This process stimulates the development of self-evaluation skills and self-analysis of learning outcomes. In turn, metacognitive skills have an active impact on the learning process, its effectiveness and success. Being components of universal competencies defined by the Federal State Educational Standard for Higher Education, developed cognitive skills impact educational, educational and professional competencies. In the proposed article the author scrutinizes the importance of the formation of metacognitive skills and their relationship with academic success. The research concerns the specifics of the formation of metacognitive skills and the correlation with students’ academic success in mastering the discipline "Foreign language in the professional field". The ability of students to independently evaluate the task complexity level, the degree of cognitive effort required for its successful solution, independent analysis and verification of the quality of performance – these skills play an important role not only in the course of their studies, but also in further activities, allowing them to constantly improve professional competencies.
