PECULARITIES OF TRANSLATING REALIA (BASED ON THE MATERIAL OF FANTASY TEXTS)

The article describes the methods of transmitting realia when translating from English into Russian. The texts of W. Le Guin’s trilogy “A Wizard of Earthsea”, translated by I. A. Togoeva and L. I. Lyakhova, are used as the material for the research. Review of the factual material in the texts under analysis shows that translation of realia employs such techniques as calquing, semi-calquing and transliteration. The frequency of other translation techniques varies and depends on the individual characteristics of the translator.
