This article analyzes the dastan «Leyli and Majnun» by the renowned Kumyk poet Abdulgalim Ibragimov (Dzhengutay), a prominent figure in the enlightenment movement in Dagestan during the early 20th century. His work is based on the lyrical-epic poem of the outstanding representative of 16th-century Azerbaijani literature, Muhammad Fuzuli. The paper emphasizes certain characteristic ideological and aesthetic features of the Kumyk version of the work, such as the principles of realistic literature–social and historical conditioning of the main character; the presence of dastan characteristics (the alternation of prose and poetry); resonance with the pressing issues of its time, leading to profound reflections on the most urgent questions of life; the inclusion of the author’s «intervention», integrating his voice into the characters’ discussions and the overall narrative; and a commitment to a deep exploration of the psychology of the characters.
