An experiment in translation as a training technique for prospective translators

Shchukina Galina O.  (International Market Institute (Samara))

The article presents the results of a translation experiment which was conducted among bachelors of translation. Though earlier in the twentieth century back-translation received a negative scholarly acclaim, it is now becoming one of the reliable sources of assessing “idiomaticness” of the original text. The participants dealt with a translated palindrome poem “Lost Generation” by Jonathan Reed. Through interactive peer-assessment of the translation quality the students learnt to analyse the reasons for grammatical, lexical and syntactical translation losses and cases literariness both in the Russian and English versions. At the end of the experiment the origin of the text was revealed and the participants could further assess their knowledge of peculiar features of English used by native speakers. The presented training technique meets requirements of a newly revised skill-based National Education Standard. It is aimed at sharpening linguistic skills both in the mother tongue and the target foreign language as well as translation skills including awareness of changes and transformations, communicative and pragmatic structure of the source text, norms of equivalence and translation quality.

Keywords:theory and practice of translation and interpreting, evaluation of translation quality, losses in translation, multi-competence approach to teaching, back-translation.
