Rumors and gossip among the Ukrainian, Russian and Belorussian emigration in Prague (1921-1939)

Discusses the role of rumors and gossip among the Russian, Ukrainian and Byelorussian emigration communities in interwar Czechoslovakia (1921-1939). Proposes the periodization of the activities of emigrant communities in the interwar period, taking into account the international situation and the situation in the Soviet Union. Draws attention to the fact that the rumors and gossip as informal information processes, in a historical context are specific cultural and communicative practices, leaving their reflections and echoes. And with these traces and manifestations in the human memory and have to face the historian. Specifies the interpretation of the concepts "hearing"/"gossip", their differences and classification of expressive and informational parameters. Noted social and psychological role of rumors and gossip. Stresses the importance of rumors and gossip indication of public sentiments and dispositions in the absence of or insufficient development of democratic institutions. Illustrated rumors-frightened and aggressive rumors, rumors-wishes and false rumors on the examples of emigration. We summarize their positive and negative aspects, the role of gossip in the formation of the emotional sphere of immigrants into the European and Soviet information flows in Czechoslovakia from the interwar period.
