Concept of belief and its influence on formation of the myth of Oscar Wilde in the Russian literature of the Silver age

Suchko Ekaterina Leonidovna  (senior teacher of the International humanitarian and linguistic institute (MGLI, Moscow))

The play by O. Wilde “Faith or nihilists” was published in Russia just twice and wasn’t included in any of the collected works of the writer released in Russia. The play was unnoticed by Russian speaking readers and critics. Even the first Russian translation of the play published in 1909 was very brief despite the fact that it was not just the first and the only play by O. Wilde based on Russian plot, but the first dramatic experience of Wilde. Inattention of translators, critics and men of letters to this piece of literary work by Wilde can be explained on the one hand by the introduction of the idea by K. Balmont that the myth about Wilde in Russian culture had already been formed and everything that went beyond its structure was rejected. On the other hand, the view of Wilde on Russian revolutionaries and problems of nihilism shocked Russian educated public.

Keywords:Concept of faith, nihilism, dramaturgy of Oscar Wilde, Silver Age of Russian literature.
