The language of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by J.Joyce: from traditions to innovations

The article considers the characteristic features of the language and the style of J.Joyce’s first published novel “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”. The figurative, picturesque and colourful language, built into the artistic system, describing daily life events, reveals the diverse flavor of the epoch and presents the main character as a talented personality as well as a rebel. One of the major tools revealing the main character appears to be his linguistic portrait, which reflects various aspects of his linguistic behaviour in the course of his growing older. The diversity of the characters provides the genre and linguistic polyphony. The images of fire and light are regarded as the major tools of artistic expression, demonstrating the inimitable style and all-pervading language rich in symbolism. Staying within the English and European classical tradition, the language and the style of “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” by J.Joyce reflect the incredible richness and diversity giving freedom to the coming epoch of modernism.
