Journalists and the second state duma of the Russian Empire: conflicts and cooperation

Nitkin P.   (Saint-Petersburg State University)

The article discusses not very well studied topic of parliamentary journalism in the Russian Empire. Using documents from Russian archives and newspaper reports we study press corps of the Second State Duma which worked from the 20th of February until the 3rd of June. The article covers such issues as accreditation of the journalists, their status in the Taurida Palace, and their relationship with Duma’s leadership and with the Taurida Palace’s security. We conclude that press corps mostly consisted of journalists from opposition newspapers and their views corresponded with the mood of the Duma’s majority. But their views also led to conflicts with Taurida Palace’s security which answered to the government.

Keywords:State Duma of the Russian Empire, parliamentary journalism, parliamentary reporters, Duma’s press corps, journalists in the Imperial Duma.
