The article deals with the history of the mathematical education’s reform in the Meiji era. Unlike most researches, the emphasis is not on copied patterns and models, but on the aspects of traditional mathematics of the Edo period, preserved after the Meiji – Soroban (Japanese abacus) and Sangaku (geometry). Thus, the dispute about Soroban is understood as a discussion about old and new methods and models of teaching mathematics in Japan as between ideologists of reforms in the Ministry of Culture and Education and in the teaching environment.
