Emergence and development of the Mari-language press

The article discusses the origin of printed publications in the Mari language at the beginning of the XX century, which is closely related to the condition and development of the Mari language during that period. The literature and statistical data available on this topic are analyzed, from the appearance of the first printed publications to the current status of the Mari-language press. The importance of newspapers and calendars for the education of Mari people and the establishment of their national identity is emphasized. Conclusions are drawn about the current situation of the Mari press.
