The study is devoted to the functions of ekphrasis in 19th-century Ural travelogues, demonstrating how the mention and description of works of art participate in the creation of symbolic meanings of space. The theoretical and methodological foundations of the research are linked to the understanding of ekphrasis as a representation of representation (N.A. Abieva) and the concept of geopoetic image (V.V. Abashov). The material for the study was provided by travel sketches by V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko and D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, whose works began the formation of Ural geopoetics. The functions of ekphrasis included the aestheticization of Ural space, marking in the paradigm of contemporary art, and revealing symbolic connections between folk art and landscape.
