THE ROLE OF NEWSPAPER DISCOURSE IN NARRATIVE LINGVO HISTORYOGRAPHY

Kosteva V.   (Doctor of Sciences (Philology), Prof., Russian State University for the Humanities )

This article deals with newspaper discourse as an integral part of the empirical base of modern narrative linguohistoriography – one of the promising areas of the history of linguistic teachings. The analysis involves the material of the Soviet press (newspapers «Pravda», «Izvestia», «Literary Newspaper») of the period 1929–1950, containing publications on linguistic topics. Using concrete examples, the author traces the discussions of linguistic topics from the point of view of the participants of the discourse, identifies discursive practices typical of the specified historical period. The focus of attention is the controversy with G.G. Špet, E.D. Polivanov's conflict with N.Ya. Marr, issues of spelling reform of the late 1920s –early 1930s. The article also notes special cliches and other rhetorical techniques used to convey the required attitude to linguistic issues or concepts of scientists. Despite the small number of publications on linguistic issues, it seems that the newspaper narrative contributes to the recreation of the spirit of the era, which necessitates its involvement in the historical context of narrative historiography, the purpose of which is to present the most complete and objective picture of a certain stage of the history of linguistics.
