The article focuses on the problem of introducing the intercultural approach to Japanese language teaching. The paper examines the underlying ideas of the intercultural approach in foreign language teaching and analyses the methodological approaches that researchers have used as the basis for Japanese language teaching. Due to the specifics of Japanese language teaching methodology, problems accompanying the application of the intercultural approach were identified, as well as a number of perspectives demonstrating the potential of the approach as an educational basis for Japanese language teaching.
