EQUIVALENCE OF THE OLFACTORY PERCEPTION VOCABULARY IN GERMAN, RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH (BASED ON THE NOVEL “PERFUME” BY P. SUSKIND AND ITS TRANSLATIONS)

Tarasova Olga Dmitrievna  (Ph.D in Philology, Associate Professor, State University of Education (Moscow) )

The purpose of the study is to determine nationally specific and similar features of the vocabulary of olfactory perception in German, Russian and English languages, comparing translations. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time, based on the material of the novel “Perfume” and its translations into Russian and English, a comparison is made of a single lexeme of olfactory perception “olfaktorisch” with its translations in two languages. The article discusses some issues of translation theory, including the distinction between the concepts of equivalence and adequacy, and an analysis of the translation from German into Russian and English of the lexeme of olfactory perception “olfaktorisch” in order to discover full and partial equivalents in Russian and English. As a result of the study, both equivalent pairs of lexemes (for German and English, German and Russian languages) and equivalent triplets (for German, Russian, English languages) were identified, translation features and patterns in two languages were found.

Keywords:equivalence, olfactory vocabulary, translation, translation transformations, novel “Perfume”.
