LEXEMES OF THEMATIC GROUP "FOOD" IN THE ASPECT OF INTER-LANGUAGE ASYMMETRY IN N.V. GOGOL’S "DEAD SOULS"

The article explores the phenomenon of interlingual asymmetry, which is manifested in the absence of equivalent language units to describe the realia of a different culture, in the differences in hyponyms and hyperonyms, the discrepancy between the semantic scope of concepts in the lexemes of the English and Russian languages. The author describes the ways to overcome interlingual asymmetry in translations of N.V. Gogol’s "Dead Souls", in which the vocabulary of the thematic group "Food" is widely represented. The author comes to the conclusion that in most cases, the translators choose the tactics of describing the dish to familiarize the English-speaking reader with peculiarities of the Russian cuisine of the 19th century.
