The article presents the results of a study of traditional and innovative directions in the formation of the spiritual and moral development of students. Particular attention is paid to the role of religious education. A new trend of spiritual and moral education in the modern educational process is presented, which began to take shape with the advent of the information revolution. Currently, in Russia, two directions in the education of students have sharply emerged. The first is related to the desire of science to accelerate the process of human advancement into a developed technological future - this is clearly the leading trajectory of educational development today, in which a human winner of the material world is being formed. Another trajectory is humanitarian.
