The article highlights the reasons that cause significant difficulties in the process of learning English by Chinese students in the Russian higher education system: difficulties of adaptation in the country of education (Russia), culture shock, features of the Chinese system of teaching English and its differences from the Russian system of teaching English, Chinese national traditions in the field of education, features of mentality, identity and character; and also suggests ways to take into account these features in the practice of teaching English in the Russian education system, associated with the adaptation of the communicative approach to teaching English adopted in Russia to overcome the difficulties characteristic of Chinese students in participating in discussions and freely discussing topics.
