TRAINING OF SHIP ENGINEERS OF THE MERCHANT FLEET OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XIX CENTURY - BEGINNING OF THE XX CENTURY

Zuev Andrey Vyacheslavovich  (Candidate of historical sciences, Associate Professor of the of private law departments, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping)

The article examines the training of ship mechanics of the merchant fleet in post-reform Russia. The author emphasizes that the maritime educational institutions that emerged in the early 18th century developed at an insufficient rate in the 1860s-1890s, despite the fact that the need for such educational institutions was very high. Unlike navigators, whose educational level increased during this time, the training of ship mechanics remained extremely low. At the beginning of the 20th century, legislative acts were adopted that made it possible to create a full-fledged system for training ship mechanics of the merchant fleet. It should be recognized that the created training system was generally quite effective, but the number of educational institutions for training ship mechanics was insufficient to replenish the Russian merchant fleet with qualified personnel.
