The article covers the history of the relationship between Mountain Jews and the Russian authorities in the Caucasus, from the beginning of the 19th century, when the region became part of the Russian Empire, to the end of the 19th century. The work traces changes in the legal and social status of the Jewish population of the Caucasus, their role in trade and cultural ties with Muslim peoples, as well as the features of Jewish self-government and judicial practice. It also examines provisions regarding the restriction of Jewish rights and the introduction of the Russian legal system, and emphasizes that despite repeated attempts to introduce anti-Jewish laws, Mountain Jews retained significant independence.
