The article is devoted to the development of genealogical historiography of the Romanovs in the 18th century. The main directions of genealogical research and their methodology are considered. The position of genealogists on the inclusion of descendants along female lines, primarily Peter III, in the Romanov family is revealed. The development of genealogical thought is considered using the works of E.D. Kusheleva, G.F. Miller, I.V. Nekhachin, F.O. Tumansky, and others.
