POSITION OF THE LATIN LANGUAGE IN THE SYSTEM OF MODERN HIGHER EDUCATION IN RUSSIA (USING THE EXAMPLE OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM 45.03.02. LINGUISTICS)

In this article is treated the place of the Latin language in the system of modern Russian higher education using the example of specialty 45.03.02 Linguistics, where Latin is taught as part of the course “Ancient Languages and Cultures”. This discipline includes not only a linguistic component, but also a cultural one. In the article are examined several university programs according to their formal criteria and content. Analysis of the programs reveals rather high variability affecting both the organization of classes and the choice of language and elements of the ancient cultures. The Latin language is not mandatory to study. This factor, along with the others, demonstrates that the place of the Latin language in the system of modern Russian higher education is reduced. The author believes that the Latin language should be preserved at the university because of its cultural and historical significance, its importance for higher professional education.
