This article examines the post-war period of German history. When the fate of the country was unclear and it was in danger of splitting into two parts, a national movement emerged that attempted to prevent this division. Due to the fact that this movement was led by communists, it is usually not considered as a national movement, however, in fact and form it was. Based on constructivist concepts that study the phenomenon of "nation", the author reveals the role of the KPG and the SED in the emerging movement for the preservation of a united Germany.
