This article presents the author's study of the nature of military coups in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors consider both the phenomenon of a military coup and the conditions that contribute to its origin. The study is based on the authors' appeal to a wide group of examples of military coups that occurred on the continent in the post-colonial period. The study examines the prerequisites for coups, including the weakness of democratic institutions, the role of security and the monopolization of this role by the army, the dependence of the armed forces on former metropolises. In the study, military coups are presented as, in many ways, a forced decision to overcome socio-political and economic crises, which often occurs not only under the slogan of stabilization, but also the creation of a fair socio-political order. However, having come to power, the military, in most cases, usurp power, which leads to the establishment of a dictatorship, and ultimately, hinders the balanced development of the state.
