The aim of this study is to identify and systematize the content of the elements of the linguistic axio-sphere of society, a fragment of which is reflected in the British sports commentary discourse. The novelty of the research lies in the examination of personal and social axiological dominants through the example of sports commentary discourse. The material for the study consists of transcripts of sports commentaries selected from Formula 1 race broadcasts on the specialized British channel Sky Sports F1. The main methods of the present article are the method of linguistic-axiological analysis and discourse analysis. Definitions of the concepts “social linguistic axio-sphere,” “individual linguistic axio-sphere,” and “individual value trajectory” are clarified. A conclusion is drawn on the interrelation and mutual influence of the social and individual linguistic axio-spheres. The individual linguistic axio-spheres of British sports commentators are analyzed and compared. As a result, a fragment of the linguistic axio-sphere of the modern British linguo-cultural community, reflected in sports commentary discourse, is constructed. The core zone of this fragment is formed by such value dominants as personal achievements, fairness, victory, and skill/professionalism. The near-core zone includes struggle/competition, courage/risk, and historical continuity. The open periphery encompasses the following axiological orientations: national pride/national prestige, safety, and tactical/strategic thinking.
Keywords:linguistic axiology, linguistic axio-sphere, social linguistic axio-sphere, individual linguistic axio-sphere, individual value trajectory, axiological dominant, evaluative vector, sports discourse, sports commentary discourse.
