This article explores the problem of text divisibility in short literary forms of Arabic fiction, using the short story "A Life for Others" by Egyptian Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz as a case study. The author reveals Naguib Mahfouz's individual style of highlighting specific moments related to content-conceptual information. The division of the seemingly continuous narrative occurs through the alternation of episodes grouped into semantic-functional entities (SFE), the use of dialogues, direct speech of characters, and the internal monologue of the protagonist, all of which are graphically connected. The author concludes that the story reveals a certain technique of the writer – to pause in order to then continue the narrative in an unexpected way. The author hypothesizes that this technique is programmed by the writer.
