The article is devoted to the analysis of the memoirs of the Russian doctor, geographer, ethnographer and traveler Ivan Lavrovich Yavorsky, who, due to his official duties, found himself in unfamiliar Afghanistan in the last third of the 19th century. The memoirs shed light on the perception of Afghanistan, its people, traditions and life by Russian people. Since the author of the memoirs was part of a diplomatic mission, he managed to get acquainted not only with ordinary residents of the country, but also with the military and political elite of Afghanistan, which makes his work interesting for both a wide range of specialists and ordinary readers. Particular attention is paid to the evaluative judgments that the author uses in relation to Afghanistan and its inhabitants, the features of the country's landscape, as well as the traditions and customs established here.
