The non-academic activities of Tomsk State University in the post-war decade (1945-1955) played an important role in shaping the cultural image of the region. The University acted as a center for organizing cultural and educational work among the population of the city, region, and country. Using the example of the university, one can see how various creative collectives have developed — choral ensembles, theater studios, musical groups, literary circles. The first university in the Urals was the initiator of the citywide events. Special importance was attached to the military-patriotic education of students, the organization of excursions to the memorable places of the city. The role of TSU's non-academic initiatives became a significant component of the social life of Soviet society, contributing to the preservation of historical memory, spiritual enrichment, and generational cohesion. The article examines the genesis of the concept of "third role", takes a broader definition of "non-academic activity", which, on the one hand, is difficult to measure from the point of view of existing methods, however, on the other hand, shows the need to reflect this part of the life of the first Siberian University.
