The aim of this article is to examine the artistic forms of alternative cultural space – a literary phenomenon not included in the official culture of the totalitarian period of Russian history – in A. Varlamov's novel "The Dome." These phenomena include samizdat literature, bard songs, Western "radio voices," student subculture, and underground rock concerts. The article examines the "province-capital" antithesis presented in the novel and analyzes the image of time it recreates—the Soviet and late-Soviet periods in our country's history. The primary research methods are comparative historical and structural. As a result of this study, it was possible to establish that by demonstrating the characters' affiliation with cultural forms other than those officially sanctioned and controlled by the state, the author creates a special (alternative) cultural space in the work.
Keywords:cultural space, alternative cultural space, Soviet culture, samizdat, subculture.
