The article discusses the history of open schools in which studied and worked N. G. Chernyshevsky on the material of the newspaper "the Saratov province Gazette". The analyzed texts of publications represent a valuable historical, cultural and local history sources which contain many interesting parts and details, enriching the scientific interpretation of the writer's life.
