This article deals with the directions of the study of bureaucracy, as a universal and yet indispensable management model. The author emphasizes the need to study this issue in historical context, because of the richness of empirical experience in the application of this model. Returns a special attention to contemporary research directions, based on the concept of knowledge management. In this context, the author draws attention to two key issues: 1) the research of staff offices (as carriers of knowledge), 2) diplomatics and records management (as carriers of information)
