                         This article discusses the objective preconditions for the emergence of the first large-scale enterprise in the Kazan province in 1855. Analyzed regional specificity, including: geographic location and value of the Volga River as a transport route; the ethnic composition of the population and its economic activity; the predominance of commercial capital over industrial; cheap raw materials and fuel etc. Author recorded the absence of large industrial enterprises in the Kazan province despite the rise in Russia in 30-40-ies of the XIX century industrial revolution. Shows the significant role of Kazan University as a powerful educational and scientific center. Pointed out that by the middle of the XIX century. A science chemistry school, which has become an important factor in the subsequent industrial development in the region.
